Shavian is an alternative alphabet for writing English. Each letter of the alphabet is based exclusively on a single sound of the present-day English language, allowing all words to be spelt exactly as they sound. This represents an improvement over the conventional Roman alphabet, which is not ideally suited to the English language's sounds -- forcing many sounds (such as "sh") to be written with more than one letter. Consequently, the Shavian alphabet and its spelling system are more efficient, more intuitive, and much easier to learn. The alphabet was designed as an entry in a competition initiated by George Bernard Shaw -- hence its name. For more about the Shavian alphabet, click on any area of the site map on the left. 4 May 2006: Most of this site is frozen in aspic, a relic of the year 2000. Much of the time-specific stuff (such as the URLS on the links page) is out of date. However, the Shavian Yahoo! group archive was updated in 2005 (that group is dead now). Furthermore, you can contact me thus (and I will respond) until I remove this email link.
